Goddess Prathiyankira Devi
There are different legends regarding the origin of Goddess Maha Prathiyankira Devi. Some say that Prathiyankira Devi emerged out from the third eye of Lord Sarabeswarar (manifestation of Lord Shiva) with 1,008 lion faces, 2,016 hands and a blood-stained tongue protruding out. She helped to reduce the ferocity of Lord Narasimha.
While the other say that when all the Gods were helpless to pacify Lord Narasimha, the three Goddess Parvathi Devi, Lakshmi Devi and Saraswathi Devi created Prathiyankira Devi and sent to fierceful Lord Narasimha, who was destroying the whole world after he extinguished the Demon King Hiraniyakasipu. When Prathiyankira Devi sat on Lord Narasimha´s thigh, he was calmed down.
Some believe that in ancient time when two rishis, Prathiyankira and Angiras, were meditating discovered a goddess through a Moola Mantram who was nameless. Later she privileged the rishis by naming her after them and hence she was called as Prathiyankira Devi.
Narasimhika is her another name. ´Naran´ means human and ´Simha´ means Lion, so she appears with Lion´s face and human body. It is also said that she has destroyed the arrogance of the Shiva´s ugra avatar ´Sarabeswarar´. It is believed that when Narasimhika shakes her mane, she shambles the stars in the universe. It is said that One wing of Lord Sarabeswarar is Goddess Sulini Devi while the other wing is Goddess Prathiyankira Devi.
She is also known as Aparajitha the invincible. In this Kali yuga, where evil is manifest in varied forms, Goddess Prathiyankira is regarded as the saviour of mankind, alleviating the sufferings of humanity. She possesses the power to offset the influences of black magic. Though fearsome in appearance, she is the very embodiment of benevolence and grace to her devotees.

She has conquered the time Kala and is beyond Time. She is being worshipped for so many yugas. As she is not bound by Kala or Time she is also known as Kali.
Mother Prathiyankira Devi is considered to be a powerful repellent of the influences generated by witch-craft. In Sri Chakra worship, she protects her devotees against all odds and guides them along the right path. She is enveloped as bliss in the letter “Ksham”.
In some image she is shown as dark complexion, terrible in aspect, having a lion’s face with reddened eyes and riding a lion or wearing Blue / black garments, she wears garland of human skulls; her hair strands on end, and she holds a trident, a serpent in the form of a noose, a hand-drum and a skull in her four hands. According to Hindu shastras there is a Moolamantra for every Devathai. By reciting this as a japam, the journey of a Devotee towards merging with his Ishta-Devathai begins. A Homam is the avahanam of the Devathai in Agni when all auspicious articles are offered while simultaneously reciting the Mantra. The Mantra’s effect is at once multiplied a hundred times. The offerings to the Devathai during a Homam are multiplied infinitely. A single grain of rice that is offered in the Homam is multiplied by infinity and immediately reached to the Devathai. Imagine every granary in all the worlds beginning to overflow at the offering of just one-grain of rice. Similarly a single flower offered in the Homam is equal to covering the cosmic form of the deity with the fragrance and beauty of that flower. Thus a Homam conducted to strict vedic practices, becomes an immediate force multiplier. The Devathai so satisfied with the sincerity and conduct of the Devotees, has no alternative but to meet every wish and command.
