Lord Dattatreyar

Born as the son of the great sage Athri and his wife Anusuya, Lord Dattatreya is the very embodiment of the Trinity – Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The Veda says that the Trinity are the different forms of the one and only Supreme Being and Lord Dattatreya stands as a classic representative of this profound truth. He is the primordial symbolization of the Supreme Truth and Reality. He is the one of the ultimate manifestations of the divine in a tripartite form representing Creation, Sustenance and Withdrawl. Lord Dattatreya has 3 heads and 6 hands. His hands weild a trident, rosary, lotus, discus, conch and a water-pot. He is represented as a Sannyasi and stands for the principles of detachment and renunciation. His 4 watch dogs are the 4 Vedas. The stone idol of Lord Dattatreya is installed as a 15 feet idol in the `Agni Moolai’ in between East and South in this temple right opposite Panchamukha Heramba Ganapathy. He is revered as the divine preceptor or the Guru and is the fountainhead of the Avadhuta Tradition. He is the bestower of Bhakti and Mukthi on his devotees.

Around this sannadhi Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Siva are installed. This gopuram represents the Orissa type of architecture.

The five natural elements, such as the earth, fire, water, air and ether are believed to have emanated from him. He is the Supreme One who co-ordinates and executes the five-fold works of creation, sustenance, destruction, causing of disappearance and granting of the divine grace.
